Description The workshop is proposed to highlight the urbanization challenges in some selected cities of Sub-Saharan African cities, place of adequate planning in mitigating the negative impact of the problem and how effective and responsive planning education can address them. This would involve presentations, discussions and sharing of ideas by participants. The session would end with a summary, recommendations and concrete next steps towards changing the narratives.

Bio Dr Abdul Husaini, a Town Planner and Geospatial Analyst, is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands and Housing, Niger State, Nigeria. Before his appointment as a Permanent Secretary in 2012, he was the pioneer General Manager of Niger State Geographic Information System (NIGIS) (www.nigisservices.com). He was instrumental to the inclusion of Minna as one of the 20 foundation members of World Council on City Data (WCCD) (www.dataforcities.org) and subsequent registration of Minna as the first City in Nigeria with ISO 37120 Certification by World Council on City Data (WCCD) in 2015. A Fellow of both the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners and Nigerian Environmental Society, Dr. Husaini has over two decades of planning practice in the public sector. He presently coordinates the Urban – Rural Linkages component of UN-Habitat Support to Niger state and Regional Center of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development, Minna (www.rceminna.com.ng).
